THE FRANCISCAN CALLING - A GIFT FROM GOD

Lucy - Professed 25 May 2003

I was called to the Secular Franciscan Order by a flyer in the foyer of St Mary's Cathedral in 2001. I wished to discover the Franciscan Spirituality so I phoned the given contact number and was informed of the location, date and time of my first meeting.

My first meeting was held in the historic Pro-Cathedral. Fr  Michael Brown ofm was the Spiritual Assistant. I was a stranger and everything was new to me. After the meeting there was fraternity. I was very impressed that the Minister made cups of tea or coffee for all and also did the washing up. The service in humility touched me. I faithfully attended meetings and events to gain insight and knowledge. I requested to be a candidate. God gave me a wonderful formator Marie and later I was joined by another candidate Sue. We journeyed together joyfully being enriched in our formation through the pages of "Fully Mature With The Fullness of Christ" by Fr Benet Fonck ofm. Sue and I completed our formation and we were professed together in the beautiful Mercedes College Chapel. We committed ourselves to simple Gospel life - to living a life of humility and in fraternity - to living a spiritual life in a secular world with the core Franciscan virtues of love and peace.

THE FRANCISCAN RULE

The Rule and life of the Secular Franciscan is to observe the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ by following the example of St Francis of Assisi who made Christ the inspiration and the centre of his life with God and people. Christ, the gift of the Father's love is the way to Him - the truth into which the Holy Spirit leads us and the life which he has come to give abundantly. Secular Franciscans are called to devote themselves especially to careful reading of the Gospel to Life and Life to Gospel.

I love the Franciscan Spirituality and ongoing formation building up the church with prayers, fraternity and simple Gospel living.
